Proxima Research provides its clients with reference geography: a territory divided into polygons called bricks. Sometimes this division is too coarse. For example, one brick may cover such a large area that it has to be shared by two or three employees, which makes their work harder to organize. To solve this, you can split a geographic layer into Voronoi polygons.
A Voronoi polygon is the area around one healthcare organization, such as a pharmacy or a hospital, that contains every point located closer to this organization than to any other. Splitting a brick into Voronoi polygons turns one large area into many small ones, each built around its own organizations. You can then distribute these polygons among your employees so that everyone gets a clearly defined area to work in.
You can generate Voronoi polygons on both standard and custom layers. This article uses a custom layer as an example: it contains a single brick, the city of São Paulo in Brazil.
Note: To learn how to add your own layer, see Uploading a Custom Polygon Layer (GeoJSON).
Important: Voronoi polygons are built around organizations, so the organizations in your project must have coordinates. If they don't, polygons can't be generated.
Generating Voronoi polygons
-
Enter drawing mode (click the brush icon) to open Drawing options.
-
In the layer list, select the custom layer you uploaded earlier, in our example sp_brick (13.10.2026), and click Apply (the check mark icon).
-
Turn on the Split venue toggle. The panel on the left now shows the rules that define how the polygons will be generated. Every pharmaceutical company sets these rules according to its own needs.
-
In the HCO type list, select the types of organizations to build the polygons around. In our example, this is Farmacia (pharmacy).
-
If needed, narrow the selection in the Specialization list, for example to Cirurgia do trauma (trauma surgery).
-
In the Bricks list, select the bricks you want to split. In our example, this is SAO PAULO. Bricks that are not selected stay unchanged.
-
Use the Companies per brick slider to set how many organizations each Voronoi polygon should contain.
-
Click Preview (the eye icon). The map shows the city of São Paulo split into Voronoi polygons according to your settings.
-
If the result looks right, click Apply (the check mark icon) to save it as a layer. To change the settings instead, click the cancel icon and generate the preview again.
Important: Saving can take some time, depending on the number of polygons and the size of the territory. Wait until it finishes.
Using your own brick codes
You can also refine the result with your own brick codes. To do this, select a brick type in the Brick field. The generated polygons are then grouped by the brick codes of their organizations, so you can assign a whole brick at once or group balancing results by brick.
Note: Every brick must have its organizations linked to it. See Brick Data in Datasets. For details on balancing, see Balancing Territories with Brick Data.
Assigning territories
The Voronoi polygons are saved as a separate layer; the original layer stays unchanged. In our example, the new layer is named sp_brick (13.10.2026)PV. Open the Summary table, select an employee and assign polygons to them on the map, the same way as on any other layer.
